New 06 number for phone lines proposed..

A new nationwide phone number range starting with the digits 06 could be created to help meet demand for new numbers, the telephone regulator said.

The 06 code could be used for personalised number services over time replacing the current 070 prefix.

Ofcom is consulting until 4 May on several changes to the UK's telephone numbering plan to meet demand.

New 03 number range to be introduced..

Ofcom, the UK Telecommunications regulator will introduce new UK-wide 03 numbers from early 2007.

Calls to 03 numbers will cost the same as calls to geographic numbers, and be included as part of any inclusive call minutes or discount schemes for geographic calls.

This will apply to calls from any line. No revenue sharing will be permitted on calls to 03 numbers.

The 03 code could be used by organisations with branches across the UK instead of 08 prefixed numbers.
